I’m sure you’ve heard of how everyone is separated from each other by no more than six degrees. But I bet you haven’t been told to take advantage of this six degrees of separation when looking for a job especially in proofreading. Now is the time for you to take advantage of your connections, starting with your friends and family. Even the person that you least expect to know someone important can be the path that lands you right in front of the CEO of a publishing house.

There are many ways to start the conversation with your friends when it comes to looking for a new gig. If you’re thinking of reaching out to your best friends, it’s easy to start off with a simple text like “Hey guys, I’m looking for a job in xyz and was wondering if y’all have any leads and/or connects?” If you’re thinking of reaching out to your acquaintance friends, Sue Gilad suggests in her Paid to Proofread book to open the dialogue with the following: “Friends, I am

beginning my proofreading career. Right now, to gain different kinds of experience, I’m

looking for any sort of project that needs a second eye.”

Having business friends go a long way when you’re not only looking for a proofing gig but also looking to build your portfolio. Ask to proofread their business cards, presentations, documents, even meeting speeches for a low price that will get your career off the ground. Overall, the major step is to just spread the word and let everyone know you are setting foot in the proofreading business.
